A huge fire at Camp-5, Kutupalong Rohingya Refugee camp, Cox's Bazar Bangladesh, made over 700 people homeless.

On January 7, 2024, at around 12:30 am, a massive fire erupted in Cox's Bazar, Rohingya Refugee Camp No. 5, Bangladesh, filmed by Omar Farooq, a Rohingya Refugee youth, using a vivo V21e smartphone. The blaze was extinguished by 4:30 am but not before destroying 976 shelters, leaving over 7,000 people homeless, impacting 213 WASH facilities, and affecting 31 communal facilities.

The affected individuals primarily consist of Rohingya refugees, totaling over 7,000, with a significant number being children and women. The cause of the fire remains unknown, prompting an investigation by government authorities, as stated by UNHCR. The video, documenting the severity of the fire incident.

The Rohingya community, numbering nearly a million, resides in crowded bamboo-and-plastic camps in Cox's Bazar, having fled Myanmar due to a military crackdown in 2017.
