The volcano Mount Marapi erupted again in western Indonesia on January 14th, as locals came out to witness fresh gouts of ash and smoke from the mountain.

The eruption took place on Sunday morning at 6:21am local time and was accompanied by volcanic ash rain that occurred around the slopes of the mountain.

The volcano had a recent lethal eruption that killed 23 people in early December 2023, many of whom were hikers climbing the mountain.

The eruption of Mount Marapi in Tanah Datar Regency and Agam Regency, West Sumatra Province, on Sunday morning at 06.21 WIB was accompanied by volcanic ash rain that occurred around the slopes of the mountain, one of which was in Bukik Batabuah Village.

The eruption that occurred was accompanied by a loud boom, which was followed by a shower of volcanic ash. Based on the report from the Marapi Volcano Observation Post, the height of the ash column was observed to be around 1,300 meters above the peak, or approximately 4,191 meters above sea level. The volcanic eruption was also accompanied by the release of reddish incandescent material, which sprayed around the peak of Mount Marapi.
