On the theme of "Rebuilding Trust," the 54th World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting will take place in Davos, Switzerland, from Jan. 15 to 19.
SOUNDBITE (English): BORGE BRENDE, World Economic Forum (WEF) President
"We are globally seeing a lack of trust between nations, but also we're seeing increased competition on the business side. And if we don't rebuild trust, we will not be able to collaborate on all the transboundary challenges that we are faced with, the climate change, future pandemics, cyber crime and cyberattacks."
Brende said that, despite the severe challenges facing the world economy, China remains an important engine of global economic growth.
SOUNDBITE (English): BORGE BRENDE, World Economic Forum (WEF) President
"China is already 20% of the global economy. So together with the U.S., it's almost half of the global economy. So China has a good starting point. China has also the benefit of the fact that it has a huge home market, a domestic market of 1.4 billion people. And traditionally China has had more focus on the export-led growth. So China can also pivot towards more demand in this home market. And if you are competitive in your home market, that's a good starting point for also then exporting later on. So China has a lot of policy tools at its hand to pivot more towards the digital economy."
