Cape Town, South Africa - 14 January 2024: Pro-Palestinian supporters flying kites and displaying Palestinian flags at Muizenberg beach were harassed by Cape Town Law Enforcement officers and private security. The officers were filming people with flags and kites when journalists arrived and backed off they realised they were about to be filmed.

One private security officer in a khaki uniform can be seen confronting journalist Saawmiet Moos and objected to being filmed even though they had moments earlier filmed those with flags and kites.

Aparna Ramani from African Artist Against Apartheid in response to the harassment by Cape Town Law Enforcement Officers and security said: “The more we organise and see the level of resistance and violence enacted upon the people showing up specifically on one side of this struggle the more we realise that this is still a very unequal city”.

For the past few days the City of Cape Town has been widely condemned on social media for painting over pro-Palestinian murals across the City. The City and its ruling party the Democratic Alliance (DA) is perceived by many as being Pro-Israel as it voted against suspending diplomatic relations with Israel. This is in contrast to the stance of the country’s ruling party the African National Congress (ANC) who this week hauled Israel before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on genocide charges.
