Two Americans on distressed yacht rescued by Philippine Coast Guard
Two Americans on a distressed yacht were rescued by the Philippine Coast Guard when their vessel suffered engine failure early Saturday morning.
The passengers - identified only as U.S. citizens Nathan and Sarra - were onboard the 'Pleasure Yacht Apkallu' travelling from Indonesia to the Philippines' Davao City in Davao del Sur province on January 13. They were entering the Philippines' waters and preparing for customs and immigration clearances.
However, the yacht's engine died some 8.8 nautical miles off Surup town in Davao Oriental province, prompting them to call coast guards for assistance.
The Philippine Coast Guard said it deployed the BRP Panglao rescue vessel amid 'challenging sea conditions' to locate the yacht and tow it back to safety.
Both ships docked at the DPWH Pier Panacan in Davao City at 5 am local time on January 13.
Nathan and Sarra were checked by medics upon arrival at the pier. They were later interviewed by immigration officials.
In a statement, the Coast Guard District Southeastern Mindanao (CGDSEM) said: 'CGDSEM CG Commo Rejard V Marfe extends his heartfelt thanks for the unified efforts in the successful search and rescue and towing operations.
'This collective effort not only increases the likelihood of success in rescue missions but also upholds humanitarian values, showcasing the importance of working together to save lives and properties at sea.'
