A hyena clan and pack of wild dogs – including puppies – battled viciously over a meal.

Steyn Jacobsohn was leading a tour through the Kruger National Park, South Africa, when she spotted a family of 11 wild dogs feeding on an impala carcass.

Dramatic footage captured a brave hyena try and muscle in on the food only to be chased away with the wild dogs biting ferociously at its tail.

The hyena returned with three more scavengers and the quartet chased away the dogs and stole their dinner from them.

Steyn, who owns South Post at Kruger, said: “In 10 years of guiding I have never seen such an interaction. It was absolutely incredible.

“We did know where to look with all the action going on. The wild dogs move very quickly as they lone hyena found out.

“They were fighting over a kill that one of the dogs made, there were 4 hyenas and 11 dogs in total.

“The whole encounter lasted for 45 minutes. Incredibly all of the wild dogs and hyenas escaped unharmed. They were too focused on getting a meal.”
