“I’m childfree by choice after growing up scared of the idea of being a mum – having kids is a selfish choice.”
A childfree woman who felt "scared" at the idea of becoming a mum says having kids is a "selfish" choice."
Abigail Porter, 24, always felt she didn't want to have children ever since she was given baby dolls to play with as a child.
She says she felt "scared" she might have to "give up" her freedom and dreams to become a mum."
Abigail didn't realise she had a choice not to have children until she was in her teens and saw her aunt living a childfree life.
Now she says she is living her "best selfish life" and is able to be "spontaneous" - something she never wants to give up to become a mum."
Abigail says choosing whether or not to have children are both "selfish" choices."
Abigail, a content creator, from Los Angeles, California, US, said: "I always felt it wasn't for me."
"As a woman we're pressured from the moment we're born - with baby dolls."
"Growing up I felt really scared of growing up."
"I thought I had no choice but to give up all my freedoms [to become a mum]."
"Then I realised I didn't have to be scared. I could chose to not have kids."
"I see both choices as selfish."
Abigail said her family took a while "to come to terms" with the idea of her not having children."
She said: "People look forward to raising grandchildren."
Abigail says she loves being able to live a spontaneous life, going out in LA in the evening with her mates and taking a recent trip to Mexico with her family.
She said: "It would have been twice as expensive if I took a kid with me."
"I live in LA in a studio - I don't have room for a kid."
"I value the spontaneity of life."
"There is a lot of sacrifices you'd have to make."
Abigail shares her views on social media and says she gets a lot of comments on her choice.

"People think you'll regret it."
Abigail says a lot of strangers say she is selfish for not having children.
She said: "There is no way around selfishness."
"We're all making choices for ourselves."
"For some people that is having kids."
Abigail loves her life and wants to show others that you can be happy with or without children.
