Fields of crops in Sariak Agam, Indonesia, were covered in ash that has been billowing from the active Mount Marapi.

"The wind direction caused ash from the eruption of Mount Marapi to fall onto our fields," Illahi said.

According to Illahi, the volcanic ash from the eruption of Mount Marapi since December 3, 2023, has caused the chilli and eggplant yields in his fields to decrease by 50 per cent.

Indonesian farmers are losing money after a volcanic eruption blanketed their villages with ash.

Footage filmed in Sariak Agam, West Sumatra Province on January 15, shows fields covered in volcanic ash.

Rahmat Illahi, a farmer, said there were two eruptions yesterday, morning and afternoon.

"Wind direction caused ash from the eruption of Mount Marapi to fall onto our fields," Rahmat added.

According to Rahmat, the volcanic ash from the eruption of Mount Marapi since December 3, 2023 has caused the chili and eggplant yields in his fields to decrease by 50 percent.

The eruption also caused the price of other vegetables such as radishes, tomatoes, carrots and others in the area to rise by up to one hundred percent.
