STORYLINE:

Australian freshwater crayfish, originally from the tropical regions of northern Australia, is often cultivated in the eastern coastal provinces of China after being introduced into the country.

In recent years, Shache County, in China's Xinjiang, has begun to explore the development of aquaculture. In the water-rich Dunbag Township, an aquaculture base has been set up for Australian freshwater crayfish, crabs, and various fish.

Before New Year's Day, a fresh batch of Australian freshwater crayfish from the aquaculture base was air-shipped to Xi'an, allowing residents there to taste "seafood" from Xinjiang.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Chinese): MUBAREK ABULAITI, Villager of Dunbag Township, Shache County, Xinjiang
"A few years ago, the village committee set up an aquaculture farm in the village. My husband and I went to Shanghai and Shandong for six months of aquaculture training. After returning, we became technicians here. Besides finishing the work at home and in the fields during the day, we take care of the crabs and feed the fish on the aquaculture farm in the morning and evening. Now, my family's income has also increased a lot."

SOUNDBITE 2 (Chinese): WANG YUNFENG, Head of aquaculture base of Dunbag Township, Shache County, Xinjiang
"In 2023, the production of Australian freshwater crayfish reached approximately 1.5 tonnes. Our advantage lies in providing residents in Xinjiang with more timely access to fresher and delicious seafood."

As the Spring Festival approaches, the aquatic breeding base in Dunbag Township has already signed orders with distributors in many cities such as Xi'an, Lanzhou, and Shanghai, and is currently negotiating cooperation with some large chain supermarkets.
