Truck driver arrested for breaking through road checkpoints in Laos and Thailand
A truck driver was arrested for breaking through road checkpoints in Laos and Thailand.
Pittaya Weerawong, 49, allegedly refused to stop for inspections, slamming through barriers at the Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge and Nong Song Hong Checkpoint in Nong Khai province on January 10.
CCTV footage shows the rogue motorist in the white Isuzu trailer truck hitting an orange traffic roadblock despite an officer waving to him from below to stop at the bridge at the border.
He passed by a police checkpoint on the way and still refused to halt the vehicle, slamming open the gates until police caught him in Udon Thani province on the same day.
Udon Thani Deputy Superintendent of Traffic Police Thanaphon Phothida said: 'Police, customs, immigration, and highway officers from both provinces helped to pursue the driver.
‘Before reaching the Ban Nong Sai intersection in Mueang District, a Highway Patrol vehicle, STH 3 KG 4, drove alongside and forced him to slow down.'
The officers cut his path on the highway, forcing him to pull over on the side.
He was handcuffed and taken by officers while he smoked a cigarette to inspect the driver's seat.
Pittaya resisted when police hauled him to the back of their truck to take him to the station, but he was eventually secured.
Officers did a drug test on Pittaya at the station, which he denied, and insisted on staying with the truck until it was opened.
According to him, he was hired by a company called Chao Lat Krabang to pick up items in Laem Chabang City with a payment of 10,000 baht (222.31 GBP) for fuel and another 4,000 (88.93 GBP) for travel allowance.
He said he travelled with his wife but left her in Thailand when he crossed into Laos to drop off the items he picked up.
Pittaya successfully crossed the border from Thailand to Laos, but when he was returning to his home country, he forcefully skipped the checkpoint.
The truck's trailer had not been opened, and an investigation is still ongoing. Meanwhile, Pittaya was charged with violating the Immigration Act for crossing the border illegally.
