In the wake of a sudden snowstorm, videos capture the treacherous conditions on Truckee roads. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) in Truckee issued successive Chain Control updates as the situation intensified.
As of 9:00 PM on January 10, I-80 faces R2 restrictions in both directions from the Nevada State line to Alta, while SR-267, SR-28, and SR-89 all bear R2 restrictions within their respective stretches. Trucks are under maximum restrictions. A prior update at 5:15 PM revealed similar conditions, with I-80 under R2 restrictions from the Nevada State line to Drum Forebay.
The escalation prompted a warning from Caltrans District 3, emphasizing the rapid onset of high winds over Donner Summit on I-80, causing reduced visibility. Commuters are urged to exercise caution, reduce speed, maintain a safe following distance, and illuminate headlights for increased visibility. The battle against winter elements intensifies on Truckee's snow-laden roads.
