This is the moment a hero lorry driver rescued crash victims on an icy road in the UK.

HGV driver Luke Wagner, 26, was coasting along Upwell Road just over the Cambridgeshire border when a car ahead of him skidded on the slippery tarmac and flipped into a roadside ditch on January 10.

He parked his lorry and ran down the embankment to help pull the conscious driver out of the icy water.

Recounting the incident, Luke said: 'I was driving along Upwell Road just before 8 am when I came along a car on its roof in a ditch. I noticed it still had all of its lights on, so I stopped next to a pickup truck who was also on the scene, just to make sure they were alright.

'Having seen how icy the roads were that morning, I didn't want to pass an incident so recent in case they needed help.

'My heart stopped at the sight of what just happened in front of me; you see something like this, but you can't comprehend what had just happened!

'I remember standing on the bank and looking down, the front of the car had already dipped under the water, and for a moment, I couldn't see anyone. I contemplated jumping in, at the risk of getting hypothermia and possibly getting myself in trouble with the rapidly sinking car.

'Fortunately, a few other individuals had stopped and climbed down to assist me, one providing a line for us to throw out to the driver.

'By the time we got him out, his car had already sunk beneath the water. We later found out that his driver's window had smashed when his car impacted the water. I think he was incredibly lucky that had happened, otherwise, he would've had a much harder time getting out.'

The drenched and shivering man was helped onto the road and covered in dry clothing as the group waited for an ambulance to arrive.

Luke was interviewed by police investigating the sequence of events before the accident. He said he was originally from England and emigrated to Australia at 8 years old before returning to the UK around 10 years ago.

He expressed gratitude for the praise he received for his heroic deed, saying: 'It's just nice to have this response from something I didn't think at the time would gain so much publicity!'
