This is the shocking moment a boy was struck by the rear door of a passing pickup truck in Thailand.

CCTV footage shows the youngster, 7, playing in front of his house in Bangkok when the vehicle with its rear door flailing open drove by on December 9.

Fearing her son might have a concussion, the boy's mum Chanisa Traiphuthorn said she took her son for an x-ray scan before lodging a complaint with the local police station.

When negotiations for compensation failed, Chanisa brought the case to the local court on January 13.

The furious mother said: 'These types of people don't even deserve to drive at all. Driving is usually easy, but he shouldn't drive at all. He should have his driver's license confiscated as well.

'He is a social burden. His employer has definitely suffered because of his driving.

'We are not after the money anymore. We want justice. No amount of money can compensate for our son's life. We want the driver to take responsibility for his recklessness.'

She added that the family had earlier tried to ask the driver 50,000 THB (1,100 GBP) in damages to settle the case, but he allegedly refused saying they had already received money from his insurance company.

The motorist, who was not named by local media, claimed he had driven over a speed ramp that caused the truck's rear doors to fling open. Chanisa was refuting his account based on the CCTV footage.

Meanwhile, Thanyarat Ngao Sri, a shop owner in the neighbourhood, said she often saw the driver going fast whenever he passed through the residential area.

The court is expected to hand down a verdict on the case by the end of January.

Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.

However, a lack of road safety education in schools along with notoriously easy driving tests, police failures to enforce road laws, and chronic under-investment in infrastructure, all appear to hamper the efforts.
