Minangkabau International Airport in Padang, Indonesia, has been shut due to the spread of volcanic ash from the erupting Mount Marapi.

Footage from January 19 shows a handful of the 2,000 passengers stranded inside the airport.

Head of the Padang Region 6 Airport Authority, Captain Megi Helmiadi, said that the closure of activities was carried out after the discovery of volcanic ash from the eruption of Mount Marapi in the airport area through a paper test.

“From the paper tests carried out, it was positive, and the amount (of volcanic ash) was quite large. Quite thick. This is likely due to the volcanic eruption that occurred this morning," explained Megi.

Throughout January, Marapi has erupted 25 times with 186 gusts. Meanwhile, since the first eruption on December 3, 2023, that killed 24 climbers, there have been 132 recorded blows.
