The South Coast Air Quality Management District reported levels of fine particles considered unhealthy for sensitive groups; the ban on burning wood has been extended

Air pollution levels are rising in the city of Los Angeles which may limit residents' outdoor activities.

According to the South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD) map, the Los Angeles Basin and San Gabriel Valley were recording levels of fine particles considered unhealthy for sensitive groups during the mornings.

Given the current air quality levels in the region, AQMD urged people with heart disease, pregnant women, children and older adults, as well as people with lung diseases, to limit prolonged or vigorous exertion outdoors. .

The ban on burning wood indoors and outdoors has been extended due to the difficulties in dispersing air pollutants in Southern California.

The regions where the ban applies are Orange County and non-desert parts of Los Angeles, Riverside and San Bernardino counties.

Burning wood is not permitted except in communities above 3,000 feet above sea level, the Coachella Valley and the high desert, or if a home relies solely on burning wood for heat.

“(The particles) can penetrate deep into the lungs and cause breathing problems (including asthma attacks), increased emergency room visits and hospitalizations,” air quality specialists said.
