India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated a Hindu temple to the god Ram on the site of a razed Babri mosque.

The mosque was destroyed in 1992 by Hindu mobs in 1992 sparking riots across the country that caused nearly 2,000 deaths.

Thousands of guests were invited to the event, including top crickets and film stars.

Much of the opposite boycotted the event as they believed Modi used it for political gain.

Depicted as a young boy, the statue of black stone was adorned with gold jewelry, gemstones, diamonds and flowers. Modi placed offerings at the idol's feet as priests chanted and prayed.
