A crane fell on a motorway killing one worker and seriously injuring another in Thailand.

The construction equipment collapsed at the accident-prone flyover site being built near Soi 72 along Rama II Road in Bangkok on January 18.

Officials said a worker Wiphak Phromprasong, 44, was found dead at the scene while Theeraphat Khannok, 24, was rushed to a hospital for serious injuries.

The crane operator, who was not named, said the pair were being lifted on a crane basket to change the hydraulic shock absorber fluid in a steel beam lifter.

He claimed the casualties did not report any abnormalities before he heard a loud noise and found that the crane sling had snapped, causing the basket to crash to the ground.

Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit ordered a three-day suspension on the construction site for investigations.

Safety concerns have been raised about the construction of the elevated highway over Rama II Road, which has been plagued by accidents and worker deaths.

In May 2023, a builder was killed and four vehicles damaged when a concrete slab smashed onto the highway.

While in July 2022, a fallen 32ft-long concrete beam crushed three vehicles on the same road, killing two and injuring five others.
