A woman has shared a very controversial shampoo trick online, but claims it keeps her locks in tip-top shape.

Twenty-seven-year-old Tita Tots has always had problems with growing her hair.

Growing sick of damage from botched hair extensions, having previously hit the headlines for paying $1,000 (£730) for a set that fell out just days later, she’s now found a new solution.

Tita says her Cuban grandmother recommended the bizarre home remedy: crushing birth control pills into her shampoo bottle.

In a reel uploaded to Instagram (@titatotss), Tita, who is from New York, explains the process to her 22,000 followers.

“My grandmother has always told me to put birth control in it [shampoo] and it will grow super fast and thick but I never had birth control to spare,” Tita told https://whatsthejam.com.

“She came to visit and brought me a pack so I crushed up eight pills and put in the shampoo and used like usual.”

The influencer claims the pills have made all the difference and now swears by the stuff.

She said: “In three months, my hair has never been this long or thick.

“I still have like half of a bottle of my shampoo, I just use it like normal [and] I still have probably like 15 pills in the pack so when I run out I can do it again!

“One thing about ‘abuelas’ [translation: grandmothers] is they have the craziest tricks that they swear by – and honestly most of them work.

“The reaction online is mostly shock.

“For me, I have the implant in my arm and I get the birth control from my grandma.

“She brought a bunch back from Cuba just for her hair.”

Instagram users aren’t all that convinced though, with many sharing their shock at the method.

One user said: “Girl it’s $30 a month and I can only get one a month, I’m not having my period to get better hair.”

Jordan joked: “Currently cutting out the implant to put into my shampoo bottle.”

Rach added: “Will I get the same results if I use my nuvaring as a hait tie??”

Another user said: “I don’t think anyone just has a whole 8-10 spare birth control pills to use on their hair that’s weird… you know how expensive birth control can be anyways.”

Another user commented: “Someone tell me if this is a joke bc i want to try.” [sic]

Tita also recently visited her hairdresser and claims they were left stunned by the speedy growth.

She said: “I actually just went to my hair stylist recently and she was in disbelief.

“She has seen first-hand how damaged my hair was.

“She could not believe how fast it grew and how thick and healthy it was!”

*** FACT BOX: WHAT THE DOCTOR SAYS***

Dr Lawrence Cunningham has weighed in on the controversial hair growth method, warning that it’s not all it’s cracked up to be.

“In my experience, there isn't any robust scientific evidence to support the claim that birth control pills applied to shampoo can promote hair growth or improve the health of your hair,” he told https://whatsthejam.com.

“Oral contraceptives are designed to work within the body's endocrine system, and their efficacy, as far as I have seen, is not linked to the health of hair when used in this way.

“When I have been asked about unconventional uses of medication, I always recommend caution.

“Using birth control in shampoo is not a standard practice, and there is a possibility of skin irritation or even hormonal disturbances.”
