Bottles clattered on shelves as a powerful earthquake struck western China in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Footage shows the quake shaking a grocery store in the Xinjiang region in western China, causing shelves lined with bottles to rattle on January 23.

The China Earthquake Networks Center reported that the 7.1 magnitude quake struck at a depth of 22 kilometres near Wushi County in the mountainous Xinjiang region near China's border with Kyrgyzstan at 2:09 am local time.

It disrupted train services and knocked out power early Tuesday morning. There were no immediate reports of casualties.

Hundreds of disaster responders were dispatched as dozens of trains were suspended and at least two houses collapsed in the epicentre. Electricity was disrupted but restored shortly after the quake, local media reported.

State broadcaster CCTV reported that several aftershocks were also felt in the region, where earthquakes are common.
