A drug-addled Thai teenage allegedly stole an SUV that his relative had borrowed 'to fulfil his dream of having a car'.

Pichitchai, 18, plucked the keys of the Toyota Fortuner from the family's house while his uncle Thaworn, 53, was busy attending a funeral in Buriram, Thailand, on January 4.

The lad then went on a joyride and bought a bottle of Korean Soju liquor to drink while listening to music.

He was found by police later that morning, wrapped in a floral duvet inside the stolen SUV, following a report lodged by the family.

Footage shows Pichitchai's furious relatives, including a livid Thaworn, pummeling him as they scolded him for the theft.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Thanadorn Phaksaram of the Satuek District Police Station said Pichitchai will be charged with 'burglary of a home using a vehicle'.

Pichitchai's uncle Thaworn said he had borrowed the Toyota Fortuner from his boss in Bangkok to attend his mother's funeral in Buriram province around 250 miles away. He was talking with mourners at the wake when he found that the car had disappeared at around 1 am.

He said the family posted on social media urging locals to help find the missing vehicle, which he would have had to pay for.

In the morning, resident Sompong Meesri, 53, spotted the SUV in front of his home after seeing Thaworn's online post. The brave man went to confront Pichitchai alone, but he was overpowered, with the teen carjacker fleeing the scene.

Police later arrived and detained the intoxicated Pichitchai.

Speaking to cops, the lad allegedly admitted to taking amphetamines before committing the theft. He added he had also stolen a neighbour's motorcycle sidecar to drive to the wake venue.

He said: 'It was never my intention to sell the car for profit. I just wanted to experience what it was like to own a car.'

Pichitchai was detained at the police station pending prosecution.
