On January 22, 2024, Almaty, Kazakhstan experienced a magnitude 6.7 earthquake, sending shockwaves through the region. Recorded by the Ministry of Emergency Situations' seismic stations, the quake's epicenter was situated 264 kilometers southeast of Almaty, on the Kazakhstan-Kyrgyzstan border, within China's Xinjiang Uyghur region. The seismic event, occurring at 00:09 local time, prompted residents to evacuate their homes in anticipation of potential aftershocks, which were still felt at 00:45. Despite the intensity, the city reported a magnitude four impact, and, as of the initial report, there were no indications of casualties or significant damage. A video circulated online captured the urgency as numerous individuals descended high-rise building stairs to ensure their safety during the quake.
