A shopper died when he plunged from the third floor of a mall in Thailand on Tuesday afternoon.

Chalong Plobmuang, 55, reportedly climbed over the guardrail before throwing himself off the ledge at The Mall Bang Khae in Bangkok on January 23.

He landed face-up and cracked his head on the ground floor's fountain.

Police Colonel Traithep Paetrat, superintendent of Lak Song Police Station, said officers received a report at 12:50 pm.

They arrived at the scene and found Chalong lying in a pool of blood. He was wearing a black shirt and grey shorts, and had severe wounds on his head and legs.

A vendor stationed near the fountain said: 'I did not see the man jump but I heard a loud noise. Shortly after, I saw mall staff lifting the him as he was covered in blood.'

Police Colonel Traithep said: 'Based on CCTV footage and witness accounts, it was found that the deceased came to the mall alone. He walked onto the balcony of the third floor viewing point before deciding to jump to his death.'

He added that a black bag and black sandals belonging to Chalong were found on a bench near the balcony.

Police have informed Chalong's relatives of his death. His body was taken to the Siriraj Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
