Redwood Creek Sets New Flow Record in Humboldt County, USA
This footage was filmed and produced 13 January 2024.
In an unprecedented event, Redwood Creek achieved a new record last week. On January 13 at 8 pm, the creek reached its peak flow, surging with an impressive 42,800 cubic feet per second (cfs) or reaching a height of 30.08 feet. This marks the 6th highest flow event ever documented for Redwood Creek.
To provide perspective, the highest flow previously recorded was 50,500 cfs on December 22, 1964. The recent event's magnitude is further emphasized by the fact that the last time flows were even close to this was on January 1, 1997, at 40,300 cfs (28.22 feet).
The Hydrology community is closely monitoring this extraordinary occurrence in Redwood Creek, emphasizing the impact of the rainy season on local water bodies. A video description captures the earlier flow at around 18,800 cfs, showcasing the significant increase recorded later that day. Stay tuned for further updates on this noteworthy hydrological event.
