Bristol City Hall, College Green, Bristol, UK. 24th January 2024. Around 150 Bristol allotment holders demonstrate outside City Hall to oppose proposed rule changes and huge price hikes. Existing plot holders have reportedly been told to chop down trees on their plots, remove children’s swings and replace glass greenhouse structures with plastic – all while facing rises in rental fees. Almost 5,000 people have signed a petition objecting to Bristol City Council's proposals. The group is also concerned the changes could have negative environmental impact on existing eco-systems, particularly if many trees have to be removed. Campaigners claim only about half of plot holders in their group have received official notice of the council’s consultation about the changes, and many also have concerns over the consultation process itself. The campaign group said it is seeking legal advice as to whether a legal challenge can be brought under Section 10 of the Allotments Act 1950, which contains restrictions around rent.
