Cape Town journalists hold vigil for journalists killed in Gaza since October 7

Cape Town, South Africa - 28 January 2024: Journalists, former journalists, dignitaries and members of the public attended a vigil for journalists killed in Gaza since 7 October 2023. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists 83 journalists and media workers as of 27 January have been killed in Gaza since October 7.

The event which was organised by a group of local journalists was held on the stairs of St George’s Cathedral. Displays recreating scenes of dead journalists were set up and many journalist wore their body armour press vests. Amongst those who addressed the crowd were Jimi Matthews (retired photojournalist), Aziz Yunus (Palestinian born journalist living in Cape Town) and Dr Allan Boesak.
