Heroic cleaner saves drowning infant after stroller slides into river in China
A river cleaner saved a drowning infant after a stroller slid into the water in eastern China.
The CCTV footage was filmed in the city of Tongxiang in Zhejiang Province on January 25.
A baby stroller, carrying a 10-month-old infant, terrifyingly slid backward into the frigid river waters near the iconic Zi Gen Bridge.
The chilling screams for help echoed through the ancient waterways, catching the attention of Xu Shuigen, a river cleaner, who was busy removing debris from the water. Acting on pure instinct, Xu immediately rowed his boat towards the desperate cries. He arrived just in time to see the infant, miraculously still afloat, while the stroller was rapidly sinking.
In a race against time and battling the bone-chilling cold of the river in the dead of winter, Xu knew he had no time to lose. The freezing temperatures were no match for an infant. With no other tools at hand, he cleverly used his trash net in a desperate attempt to scoop the baby from the water.
The boat's rocking and the baby's small size made the rescue incredibly challenging. After several heart-wrenching misses, Xu, driven by determination, finally managed to secure the baby in the net.
As Xu cradled the child to safety, the panic-stricken parents, who were on the riverbank, rushed to receive their little one. The baby, miraculously unharmed, was quickly wrapped in warm blankets.
After ensuring the baby's safety, Xu, ever the dedicated worker, retrieved the sunken stroller and returned to his duties, as if it were just another day on the job.
The baby, it was later revealed, was only 10 months old. The near-tragedy occurred during a brief moment while the family was switching hands on the stroller, which then slid down the slope into the river.
The timely rescue ensured that the infant suffered no serious injuries. The grateful family visited Xu to express their heartfelt thanks for his heroic actions. Xu, in his modesty, stated that helping those in need, be it an elderly person or a child, is a natural human instinct.
