"When you take off the mask, you are mortals. But when you put on the mask, you are the god.
In the ancient Chinese Nuo mask dance, these exquisite masks are worn by dancers to play characters in Chinese legends to pray for blessings."

In ancient China, the Nuo dance was spread among people of various ethnicities along the Yangtze and Yellow River valleys, and in southwestern areas.

In 2006, the Nuo dance was listed as one of China's national intangible cultural heritages. As the symbol of Nuo dance, the quality of Nuo mask plays a vital role.

Luo Chunming, an inheritor of Nanfeng County's Nuo mask making, has been doing this job for 34 years.

SOUNDBITE (English): SHU CHANG, Xinhua correspondent
"Mr. Luo said, this is called the flower of wood. When we carve our mask, we tap it over and over again very evenly. So after a long time, the wood has formed this kind of shape just like a flower."

STANDUP 2 (English): SHU CHANG, Xinhua correspondent
"This mask is called "Kaishan," or the creator of the world in Chinese legends. And this one with a green face is called "Leigong." It means the god of thunder.
In Nanfeng County, the Nuo dance dates back to more than 2,000 years ago, and today is still widely performed at the Chinese Lunar New Year."

At present, there are over 20 Nuo mask making enterprises in Nanfeng County.

The masks have been exported to over 30 countries, including Greece, the Netherlands and the United States.
