Record-breaking snow blanketed Anchorage in Alaska on Monday as the city hit a milestone for snowfall, local media reported.

Footage captured by Alaska-based climate scientist Brian Brettschneider shows thick snow covering homes and trees on January 29 as the city grappled with a winter storm.

He said: 'Anchorage had a snow depth yesterday of 37 inches and today it is also 37 inches. The last time we had consecutive days with a snow depth this great was in March 1959.'

Nearly 16 inches of snow fell on the city over the weekend as the total snowfall breached the 100-inch mark.

Experts said it was the earliest accumulation of more than 100 inches in Anchorage.

They said if the trend continues, Anchorage could break its all-time record of 134.5 inches recorded in the winter of 2011.
