A restaurant is serving pizza topped with notoriously stinky durian fruit in Thailand.

The Durian Papa cafe, located in the Thamaharaj area of Bangkok, put its own spin on the Italian staple with the 'Pizza de Durian' meal that costs 285 THB (8 USD).

Footage shows staff preparing the dish, which is made with rich and creamy 'Mon Thong' or golden pillow durians.

The soft dough disc is slathered with a white sauce made from pureed durians. Instead of pepperoni or sausage bits, chunks of durian flesh are used as toppings.

Mozarella cheese is then sprinkled on the pizza, then broiled to create a blistered brown crust. A final sprinkling of oregano to help temper the durian's smell completes the Pizza de Durian.

Cafe staff said Mon Thong durians were used as their flesh is custardy and has a more mellow odour compared to other durian varieties.

Aside from the pizza, the cafe specialising in durian-themed dishes also offers other food such as salads, ice creams, cakes, croissants - all with durian as the star ingredient.

Customers with adventurous palates can visit Durian Papa on the first floor of the Tha Maharaj shopping centre in Bangkok.

Durian is a tropical fruit distinguished by its large spikes and pungent smell. It has a sweet taste and creamy consistency despite the strong odours.

In Asia, durian is sometimes referred to as the ‘King of Fruit' after fanatics drive prices of its best varieties to ridiculous amounts. In 2019, a durian sold for 40,134 GBP at an auction in Thailand's Nonthaburi province.

In April 2018, Alibaba founder Jack Ma signed a $428 million deal with the Thai government to export durian to China, following strong demand from Chinese consumers.

Ma said that shortly before news of the deal was announced, 40,000 durians were sold online, which rose to 80,000 within a minute.
