SOUNDBITE (Spanish): MARCELA VERA, Economist and scholar of the University of Santiago, Chile (Usach)
"I think it is a very important problem that whenever an international opinion is issued regarding the human rights in China, there are related conceptual differences regarding how to interpret cultural phenomena.
This is how this region (Xinjiang) has generated a series of policies to let different ethnic groups coexist with each other.
Therefore, the way that Western world decodes this will be quite biased if they don't analyze this context from the correct vision, which is the autonomy is based on respect for international law and people's right of self-determination to define their social policies.
Xinjiang has generated an important economic development for China, even historically from the beginning of the Ancient Silk Road. It is a region that connects Asia with Europe.
So what they (Western world) want to do is to weaken the economy of this area (Xinjiang) with an accusation that does not correspond to human rights terms, given that the potential of this region is also very relevant."
