Nauru held a ceremony on Wednesday to celebrate the 56th anniversary of independence.
"Fifty-six years ago, our forefathers embarked on a journey of sovereignty, asserting our right to self-determination and independence," Nauruan President David Adeang said at the ceremony outside the government office building.

"The challenges we face, including the global issues of climate change, demand our collective effort and resilience. Nauru will continue to play an active role on the world stage, advocating for environmental protection and sustainable development."
"Today, we honor the legacy by not only reflecting on our past but also looking forward to the future," he said.

"Earlier this month, in line with the one-China principle, we established diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China."
During the ceremony, Adeang also laid a wreath at the base of a war memorial in front of the government building.
Representative of the Chinese government Luo Zhaohui, head of the China International Development Cooperation Agency, was also present at the ceremony.
People from all walks of life in Nauru, including those from government departments, civil society organizations, local businesses and tribes, held a parade during the ceremony.
