Swedish tourists fined for partying on car roof while driving
A group of Swedish tourists were fined for partying on a car roof while driving along a road in Thailand.
Video shows three women climbing out of the windows of the moving red vehicle to place a Bluetooth speaker on its roof. They continued to sit on the windows as the car coasted along the island of Phuket on January 30.
Shocked drivers who recorded the traffic violation reported the incident to the Karon district police station.
Officers found that the tourists had rented the car to travel around the busy tourist destination, which earlier this week saw a pair of Australian tourists arrive at the airport wearing only 'budgie smuggler' swimming trunks and flip-flops.
The tourists - three Swedish women and one man - were later apprehended and reportedly apologised for their behaviout.
They told authorities they felt guilty for causing panic and promised to follow local laws for the rest of their holiday.
Police said the backpackers were fined according to the law.
A spokesman for the Karon district police station said: 'Karon Police Station tracked this group of tourists for legal action on January 30 at 5:45 PM, and the fine has been paid.
'The group of tourists has apologised and expressed remorse for their actions, affirming their commitment not to repeat such behaviour.
'They have also asked for an opportunity to be responsible tourists, while also extending an invitation to others to visit Phuket and urging them to adhere to traffic laws for the safety of themselves and others.'
Phuket, an island in the south of Thailand, is one of the most popular destinations for tourists.
