The Chamber of Deputies rejects Milei’s "omnibus law" in Buenos Aires, Argentina
This footage was filmed and produced 6 February 2024.
[Note: speech in Spanish]
The Chamber of Deputies debated yesterday afternoon article by article the omnibus law, after the marathon day of more than 30 hours that led to the approval of the opinion in its general terms.
In the framework of a tense debate, a series of rejections of several key points for the ruling party caused the deputies of La Libertad Avanza to request the return of the project to committees.
After the tough setback in Congress, the government accused the governors of "destroying" the omnibus law and threatened to "not discuss" the bill, which will have to go back to committee to be debated. And he warned that he will continue his economic plan with or without support.
SOUNDBITE:
1. Facundo Manes, deputy for the Union Civica Radical (UCR): "You saw him were losing the votes and decided to withdraw the law from the precinct and return to committee, so what we ask is rationality."
2. Oscar Zago, Deputy of La Libertad Avanza (LLA): "It returns to commission because there are deputies who had promised to accompany it through the governors, the governors did not keep their word so the treatment returns to commission to continue working and continuing dialogue with all the blocks (...) no, We do not feel betrayed, we feel that we are wrong."
3. German Martinez, deputy for Union por la Patria (UP): "That the ruling bloc itself has asked the motion back to committee , this is clearly a parliamentary defeat of part of the political space of President Milei".
4. Myriam Bregman, deputy for Frente de Izquierda y de los Trabajadores (FIT): "This means that they have to start from scratch as if it were any other law that from scratch they have to start, with a huge wear and tear of this government, which is not just the wear of watching them ignore, as they cut the microphone, as they beat, Let us not forget, for a minute, Mr Espert, how he wanted to kick this debate so that we cannot express ourselves against it, but also because popular repudiation was felt throughout the country."
