A demolition turned violent when furious homeowners lobbed molotov cocktails at police over a land dispute in the Philippines.

Dramatic footage shows the residents hurling glass bottles and rocks at officers armed with riot shields in Angeles City, Pampanga province, on February 8.

The cops were pushed back when a molotov cocktail burst into flames at their feet amid victorious screams.

The conflict stemmed from a longstanding land dispute over the city's Cuayan and Anunas areas, where some 500 farmers' houses were situated.

Developer Clarkhills Properties Corporation, which is now claiming the 73-hectare land, said the residents' certificates of land ownership - which had been awarded under an agrarian reform program - had been cancelled by the Supreme Court in 2013.

Clarkhills legal counsel Atty. Gener Endona said the decision was passed after it was found that the land was used for residential purposes instead of agriculture.

Elizabeth Marasigan, Sheriff of the Department of Agrarian Reform Region 3, said: 'What I can say is, the sheriff's job is ministerial to implement the writ of execution that was issued on May 6, 2022.

'We went through the proper procedures, and there is no temporary restraining order for us to halt the demolition.'

The Angeles City government had earlier said it was planning to expropriate the land after Clarkhills allegedly violated its 'no demolition' agreement.

Meanwhile, residents were calling on Philippine president Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who goes by the nickname 'Bongbong', to help settle the dispute.

Homeowner Jing Padilla, speaking to local reporters, said: 'President Bongbong Marcos, I hope you can help us with this longstanding problem here in Balubad, Anunas, Angeles City.

'It's been a long time. No one from the government is visiting to check on us.'
