An airline has come under fire after a video emerged showing passengers singing religious chants and playing a drum mid-flight.

The incident allegedly took place onboard a single-aisle Airbus A320 a flight from the city of Ahmedabad to the city of Ayodhya, in India, on February 5.

Phone footage shows one IndiGo passenger playing the dholak, a two-headed hand-drum, to the rhythm of the 'Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram' religious song.

Many other passengers aboard the full flight sang along and clapped their hands, while some kept quiet and watched.

IndiGo has not yet responded to the incident but locals criticised the the airline for not controlling the passengers in the cabin.

Sanjeev Chhabra said: 'Isn't this a Security Risk?'

Another resident added: 'How did they allow this check-in cabin baggage in the first place? Is the airline following guidelines or violating them?'

Sab Changa Si said: 'Indigo is preparing well to get grounded. These sorts of antics permitted by the airline should get the Aviation Minister swinging into action.

'How can that dholak be taken into the aircraft? It can be used as a weapon to maim or kill someone.

'I'm not buying this argument that it is for bhajans. This cannot be allowed. No wonder the country is turning into a circus.'
