A plane full of passengers was forced to make an emergency landing when a sudden foul smell began filling the cabins shortly after takeoff.

IndiGo flight 6E449 which took off from Delhi towards Mumbai, India, reportedly had to return to the Indira Gandhi International Airport after experiencing 'technical issues' on Friday, February 9.

Almost immediately after leaving the airport, passengers onboard the Airbus A320 began complaining of an unpleasant smell, forcing the pilots to turn back less than 30 minutes later.

Phone footage captured from inside the plane shows one male passenger seemingly about to faint from the stench.

The video was captured filmed during a half-hour 'ordeal' that the people aboard had to endure.

Dr Binu Varghese, who claimed he was onboard the flight, said some passengers even came close to choking.

The doctor also claimed cabin crew would not answer their questions when they asked what was happening.

A second video shows the fliers exiting the aircraft after it had landed safely.

An IndiGo spokesman confirmed in a statement that flight 6E449 returned to Delhi because of a 'momentary foul smell.'

The airline said: 'An alternate aircraft was arranged for the passengers. We deeply regret the inconvenience caused to all the passengers.'
