Zoos Unite in Heroic Gesture: Aid Shipment Saves Kyiv Zoo Amidst War Ravagesv
This footage was filmed and produced 9 February 2024.
On February 9, 2024, the Kyiv Zoo received a much-needed aid delivery to alleviate the scarcity of feed for its 4,000 animals, a situation exacerbated by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The Schonbrunn Zoo and the Innsbruck Alpine Zoo collaborated to support the initiative, with two trucks carrying over 25 tons of dry food for various animals like giraffes, elephants, rhinos, and birds, as well as a mobile X-ray machine, arriving from the Berlin Zoological Gardens.
Stephan Hering-Hagenbeck, director of Schonbrunn Zoo, emphasized the importance of solidarity within the zoo community, stating, "It was very important to us to help here. Within the zoo community, we try to support each other wherever we can." The aid shipment, valued at 72,000 euros, was made possible through the coordination efforts in Berlin and the generous contributions of donors, as expressed by Andre Stadler, director of the Alpenzoo Innsbruck.
Despite the challenges posed by the conflict, the team at the Kyiv Zoo remains dedicated to caring for their animals, often receiving new additions from war zones with critical needs. Kyrylo Trantin, director of the Kyiv Zoo, stressed the urgency of the relief supplies and donations, which are instrumental in sustaining their operations.
The joint effort of the Schonbrunn Zoo, Alpine Zoo, and Berlin Zoological Gardens reflects a broader commitment to supporting colleagues in crisis situations, with previous aid deliveries totaling seven over the past two years. Andreas Knieriem, Director of Berlin Zoo and Tierpark, expressed gratitude for the collaboration, stating, "We feel obliged to support our colleagues in these difficult times. I am pleased that we were able to make a strong statement together with Schonbrunn and the Alpine Zoo this time."
