Girl enthusiastically practices lion dance as passing troupe plays music for her
A 7-year-old girl was captured enthusiastically practising a lion dance outside her family's shop, while a passing troupe played music for her in southern China.
Video filmed in Jieyang City in Guangdong Province on February 10, shows a girl performing a lion dance on a roadside, while a professional lion dance troupe waiting for the traffic light spontaneously played music for her.
The girl then performed a segment with utmost seriousness and even bowed three times in return to the senior lion dancers, continuing until the red light ended.
The father Mr. Lin said, "Actually, that day was the first time we let our daughter, Yueyue, practice in front of the shop. Before that, she had only practised on the second floor of our shop at home. We never expected that she would encounter a professional lion dance troupe just casually practising by the street, let alone receiving so much attention."
Mr. Lin mentioned that he used to practice lion dance himself and that his daughter developed an interest in it at the age of 5.
The lion dance costume seen in the video cost approximately 1,000 yuan (£110), and she usually self-studies at home.
"What she wants to do in the future depends on her own decision; for now, academics come first," Lin added.
A staff member of the Sun Zhengao Shaolin Martial Arts Academy, part of the lion dance troupe in the video, explained, "In the local culture, lion dance performances, which have a history of over a hundred years, are required for celebrations every Chinese New Year."
Recollecting the encounter, the staff member said, "As lion dance enthusiasts, we couldn't help but beat the drums when we saw the little girl practising." Regarding the girl's performance, the staff member commented, "She did very well, and it's evident that she has practised diligently. Seeing children like her carrying on this cultural tradition brings us great joy."
Yueyue expressed her gratitude to the lion dance troupe for playing music for her through a video, and she also sent New Year blessings to everyone.
The video was provided by local media with permission.
