This is the spectacular moment a volcano spewed huge clouds of ash and gas in Mexico.

Footage shows the Popocatepetl Volcano, located in the states of Puebla, Morelos, and Mexico, belching thick volcanic gas amid heightened seismic activity on February 11.

Mexico's National Center for Disaster Prevention (CENAPRED) said a total of 68 emissions of water vapour, ash, and volcanic gases were recorded over the last 24 hours, along with 629 minutes of 'high-frequency, low-amplitude' tremors.

According to the Volcanic Alert Traffic Light of Cenapred and National Autonomous University of Mexico, the volcano is currently under a 'yellow phase 2' alert - the middle level of a three-tier warning scale.

Locals were warned not to enter a 12 kilometre radius of the volcano.
