Traffic slows down as security heightened in northern India to tackle farmer's protest
Traffic on the Delhi-Meerut Expressway turned sluggish in northern India's Delhi owing to the heightened security measures which were put in place to tackle the farmer's protest.
This occurred on February 13.
Visuals showed the vehicles moving pretty slowly on the highway. The highway on both sides, was packed by vehicles and commuters found it very tough to move smoothly on this path. The cars frequently had to stop due to the barricades being put in place to tackle the farmers. Besides the barricades, nails were erected on the road to stop the farmers from entering the capital. Also, not just police forces but also the para-military officials were deployed on the border areas to tackle the protest and monitor the law-and-order situation.
All of these heavy security arrangements have led to the slow movement of traffic on the roads with an example being that of the Delhi-Meerut expressway, where commuters had to experience jams.
As per a report, the farmers are protesting for the government to guarantee a Minimum Support Price (MSP) for their crops. This was a condition which was agreed upon in 2021 when farmers called off their protest. Also, they have sought justice for victims of the violence in Lakhimpur Kheri in 2021 which led to the deaths of eight people, leaving several injured. Moreover, the farmers have also sought the implementation of the recommendations by the MS Swaminathan committee on agriculture, which sought the increase of MSP to 50 per cent above the weighted average cost of production. The farmers are also seeking a pension of Rs 10,000 ( USD 124.46) per month for those above 60 years of age and also more prices for sugarcane.
