Zoo worker suspended for breaking shovel during kangaroo brawl intervention in China
A zoo worker was suspended for breaking a shovel during a kangaroo brawl intervention in northern China.
The video was filmed in the city of Qinhuangdao in Hebei Province on February 12.
Two feisty kangaroos were engaged in a relentless brawl, and a female staff member resorted to drastic measures, wielding a shovel in an attempt to separate the combatants. However, the shovel snapped in two under the intense pressure of the skirmish. Undeterred, the kangaroos continued their heated exchange, much to the dismay of onlookers.
Eyewitnesses described a series of intermittent rounds of combat, with the female employee attempting to intervene cautiously, mindful of any potential mishaps. Despite her repeated efforts to defuse the situation, the conflict persisted, prompting her to urge bystanders against capturing the spectacle on camera, insisting, "Stop recording, what's there to film about a fight?"
In a further attempt to quell the altercation, a male staff member intervened with a bamboo pole, yet his efforts proved futile, exacerbating the intensity of the confrontation.
The female employee, feeling helpless, finally picked up the shovel, only for it to snap in two on the spot. One of the kangaroos had blood stains on its neck, presumably from being scratched by the other during the fight.
Ultimately, the skirmish came to an end as one of the kangaroos was forcibly ushered indoors, though the other stubbornly remained stationed at the entrance, refusing to budge.
In response to the incident, park authorities have taken swift action, announcing the suspension of the involved female staff member pending further investigation, with appropriate measures underway to address the situation.
A netizen commented on a Chinese social media saying, "A kangaroo's kick can easily break a person's ribs. The staff member's urgent intervention was likely aimed at preventing harm to visitors", while another person also said, "She got suspended? Didn't the shovel break when it hit the ground? Otherwise, how else could she have stopped it?".
The video was provided by local media with permission.
