Activists Express Demand for Food Security at the European Forum in Strasbourg, France
This footage was filmed and produced 8 February 2024.
Two citizens supporting Food Response captured attention by intervening during a debate at the European Forum on Bioethics.
The city of Strasbourg, a key location of European institutions, was carefully chosen. On February 8, at the European Parliament, the relaxation of rules regarding new GMOs, produced using new genome editing techniques, was notably voted on.
The interruption of the European Forum on Bioethics aims to challenge the scientific community participating in the event. This exhibition is a focal point for reflection on the ethical choices that concern our future, particularly in the agricultural sector.
Agriculture is responsible for 21% of greenhouse gas emissions in France and contributes to biodiversity loss and soil degradation. This situation jeopardizes food security.
At the same time, the living and working conditions of farmers deteriorate daily, under the pressure of large-scale distribution, with even cases of selling at a loss. According to the Agricultural Social Welfare Fund, a farmer commits suicide every day in France.
Contemporary food challenges are exacerbated by practices in the agro-food industry, which saw its profit margins rise to a record level of 48% last year, thus contributing to inflation for which it is largely responsible.
Faced with these alarming observations, Food Response's demand is as follows: "the integration of food into the general social security system." A claim inspired by the Food Security Social Collective.
