A humongous 102 kg grouper fish was hauled ashore by a lucky fisherman in Taiwan.

The angler, Xi Hung, was fishing on his raft off Xiaoliuqiu island in Pingtung County when he reeled in the deep water leviathan on February 5.

Because of the grouper's size, Xi had to have it pulled out of the water with a crane truck.

The local fisherman's association said curious onlookers flocked to gawp at the sea leviathan, which was as long as an adult human.

It weighed a whopping 102 kilos and was sold for NT$68,000 (around $2,200).

Hung said he felt 'like he had won the lottery' and that his earnings from the grouper were a welcome windfall for the Lunar New Year.

He added: 'This is the biggest fish I've caught in my life. I don't think I'll catch anything as big again.'

A grouper is a type of fish belonging to the sea bass family, typically found in tropical and subtropical waters. These fish are known for their robust bodies and large mouths, often featuring a distinct pattern of colours and markings.

Groupers are popular among seafood enthusiasts for their firm, flavourful flesh.
