Hundreds of couples claimed were married on Valentine's Day in Thailand.

Around 898 couples, including same-sex partners, registered their marriage at the Bang Rak District Office in Bangkok on February 14.

Bang Rak, which translates to 'Love Village' in Thai, marked the day of hearts with a special marriage certificate lottery.

During the event, 12 couples had chance to win a golden marriage certificate, with the lucky winners receiving various prizes.

Khun Oy, one of the wives, said: 'We decided to join this event to make it more special.

'The name of the district office is Bang Rak, which has the Thai word for 'love' in it. My boyfriend is also residing in this district, so we decided to get our marriage certificate here.'

Her husband, Jom, added: 'I also felt a bit nervous because it is the first time in my life obtaining a marriage certificate.'

The Christian celebration of Valentine's Day has been a commercial success in the culturally flexible Southeast Asian country.
