Nine people were rescued when their private jet crashed off a beach in Ecuador on Monday morning.

The Britten-Norman BN-2A-21 Islander registered HC-CXK was travelling from San Cristobal to the Aeropuerto de General Villamil when it plunged a mile off Punta Carola Beach on February 12.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation said the aircraft was carrying two pilots and seven passengers, all of whom were rescued safely.

Ecuador's emergency service ECU 911 said the passengers and crew arrived at the Tiburon Pier in San Cristobal and were taken to a hospital.

Officials have not yet clarified the cause of the crash.
