Tourists spark outrage dancing on top of taxi in Thailand
Tourists sparked outrage when they danced on top of a moving taxi on a Thai island.
Footage shows the rowdy backpackers on the roof of a tuktuk cab stuck in a traffic jam in Phuket.
Police Colonel Chalermchai Hersawat, superintendent of the Patong Police Station on the island, summoned Thai tuktuk driver Yongyuth Hasan on February 10, after a video emerged of the tourists' dangerous antics.
Yongyuth said he had picked up the 11 passengers from Kata Beach and was taking them to the Soi Bangla area.
The visitors had asked to connect their phones to the taxi's speakers and began blasting their own music during the trip.
Yongyuth said: 'Traffic was heavy when we reached the Patong area. Then, one of the passengers climbed on top of the tuktuk and started to dance.
'I warned him to sit inside, but each time the taxi stopped, he would dance there again without listening to me.
'It was difficult for me because I had to be mindful of the road, and the passengers.'
When they had finally arrived at red light strip Soi Bangla, he scolded the tourists, who he said apologised to him after the dressing down.
Local police then summoned Yongyuth to the station and ordered him to pay a fine for his passengers' behaviour.
The frustrated cabbie said: 'I wanted to ask the police, what more could I have done in that situation? The tourists weren't listening to me.
'No driver wants their passengers to dance on top of the car. It could cause their vehicle to shake or be damaged.
'I want people who see the video to understand the context first before commenting about me.'
Another tourist caused outrage when he was caught urinating on the road from the back of a moving bus on the same island in December.
While a group of Swedish backpackers were detained and made to apologize for partying on a car roof while driving around Phuket on January 30.
