Customs officials thwart gold smuggling attempt by Indian traveller in southern India

Officials of the Customs Department thwarted an attempt at smuggling gold by an Indian traveller who had flown in from Kuwait, in southern India's Karnataka.

This incident happened at the Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru on February 15.

Visuals showed the decorative incense burner in which the man had attempted to smuggle the gold.

An official of the customs department unscrewed both ends of the incense burner and out came crude cut pieces of gold, that he was trying to smuggle.

Six such gold pieces were recovered from the inside of this incense burner and it was placed on a tray. According to a report, the customs officials intercepted the man based on profiling and seized the gold from him, which weighed 279.5 grams (0.616 lbs) and is valued at a whopping Rs 17,23,117 (USD 20749.57).
