Around 12.5 million in Rajasthan, western India, performed a range of yoga stretches for an impressive world record attempt on February 15.

The record attempt was organised by the Education Department of Rajasthan and saw students from the state's school perform a sun salutation (a sequence of 12 yoga poses).

The record was recognised by the World Book of Records.

An initiative has been taken to make Surya Namaskar mandatory in the schools of Rajasthan. Children in all the schools created a world record by performed Surya Namaskar in many schools of Rajasthan on the occasion of 'Surya Saptami'.

This record was made by the Education Department of Rajasthan, in which one crore twenty five lakh students did Surya Namaskar together. The representative of the World Book of Records presented a certificate to the Education Minister Madan Dilawar, in Jaipur.

In this video, school students perform Surya Namaskar yoga during a special yoga session on the occasion of Surya Saptami, at a government girls school in Beawar district of Rajasthan on 15 February.

Surya Namaskar or Sun Salutation is a sequence of 12 powerful yoga poses. Besides being a great cardiovascular workout, Surya Namaskar is also known to have an immensely positive impact on the body and mind.

The sun shining in the sky is called Surya. Surya Saptami is a Hindu festival celebrate on the seventh day in the bright half (Shukla Paksha) of the Hindu month Magha. It also marks the birth of Surya and is hence also celebrated as Surya Jayanti (the sun-god’s birthday).
