STORYLINE:
The number of suspects detained in connection with the landslide at a gold mine in eastern Türkiye, where nine workers were trapped, has increased to eight, the state-run TRT broadcaster reported on Thursday.
One more suspect was apprehended on Thursday as part of the investigation launched after the landslide hit a dump-leaching area of a gold mine in the Ilic district of Erzincan province on Tuesday, following seven detentions on Wednesday.
The detained suspects included the company staff holding managerial and administrative positions, the broadcaster reported.
Search and rescue operations continue to reach the workers trapped underground in the Copler gold mine area.
Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya earlier told reporters that the workers trapped under the landslide are beneath a volume of 10 million cubic meters involving a mound of soil extracted from the mine and that the mass has moved approximately 800 meters.
The Copler mine is a world-class epithermal gold-silver-copper deposit. Discovered in 1999, the mine poured its first gold in 2010.
