A pair of giant anteaters were married at a Thai zoo on Valentine's Day.

The insectivorous couple Billy, 7, and Leona, 5, tied the knot as schoolchildren and other zoogoers celebrated their union at the Nakhon Ratchasima Zoo on February 14.

Zookeepers guided the anteaters for their wedding procession through the exhibit area adorned with red drapery and Valentine's hearts.

Zoo director Thanachon Kensingh performed the bouquet toss for Billy and Leona, while visitors wrote well wishes for the newlyweds on cards.

Billy and Leona were transferred from Singapore last September.

Giant anteaters have long bodies and tails, with a bone under their long nose connecting the upper and lower jaw.

Inside their snout is a long, sticky tongue which can extend to 50 centimetres that they use to catch their prey.

They also have large claws on their toe fingers as a defense mechanism.

Giant anteater habitats can be found in South America and throughout Brazil, in tropical grassland forests, evergreen forests, and tropical rainforest areas.

They usually eat insects, mostly termites and ants. They are classified as vulnerable according to the IUCN Red List due to habitat destruction.
